Iowa City West has a “tradition of excellence” in all sports and activities and that requires a huge amount of effort on everyone’s part to create a great experience for our students. This year, more then ever due to our School District's financial crisis, we want to raise money to ensure our West High Students have the same quality experiences that students have and should continue to receive. A donation to our Booster Club, Club West, will help directly pay for those expenses that are no longer be covered by our district.
Without the citywide and school specific booster clubs, school sponsored sports would be a very different experience for our children. Many people are not aware that all funds from athletic passes goes back to the district. The funds from the athletic passes help cover costs for umpires, transportation for athletes, maintenance for facilities, coaches’ salaries, and safety equipment for student athletes (i.e., football helmets, catcher’s equipment, etc.). As you can imagine, those district funds do not cover all of the expenses required to run successful sports programs. Even before the financial crisis, all three ICCSD High Schools face an annual $70,000-$80,000 gap between district funding and the funds required to run their respective athletic programs.
The West High Athletic Department receives a great deal of their funding from the Iowa City Boosters Kinnick clean-up and Club West. Each year, Club West works extremely hard to make up for the gap in funding. In 2021-2022 Club West generously committed $80,000 to West Athletics and in both 2022-2023 and 2023-2024, Club West generously committed $50,000 to West High Athletics. The funds donated by Club West are used to purchase a variety of required items like balls, nets, uniforms, mats, etc. In addition, these funds are used for the swimming pool, bowling alley and golf course rental, as well as to purchase equipment for football and baseball, scouting software for our sports programs, and practice clothing for many of our programs. Club West raises quite a bit of our own funding through the sale of memberships, spirit apparel, staffing our concession stands and the athletic ticket booths, and events such as our West High Pancake Day and the West High Golf Outing.
Now more than ever, please consider purchasing a membership to Club West Booster Club to build funds for the West High and Northwest athletic programs. Your donation provides the essential needs for our students and will help continue the “tradition of excellence” at West High.
